Sex And Ayurveda

1. GENERAL INTRODUCTION

Sex is one of the most essential aspects of our life. Ironically it is one of the most obscure topics which is discussed by our families or society. The only place where it is discussed to an extent is amongst the friends in the school or the college group. The most hazardous fact about it is that the group where the “sex and the related problems” are discussed in the school or college group is that they lack the correct and authentic knowledge about it.

According to Ayurveda – the three pillars essential to sustaining a healthy human life are food, sleep and sex. Ayurveda, the science of life gives as much importance to sex as to food and sleep.

Apart from just being a necessity for continuation of our generations, it has far wider aspects. Just to sight one example, our ancient classics had mentioned sex as one of the best Stress-busters. Few references to support Ayurveda and its emphasis on sex are :

  • Sex is an integral part of our daily habits (Dinacharya)
  • The ideal time for intimacy is at night, about two hours after dinner.
  • Perverted or unsatisfying sex has adverse effects on your mental and physical health, as it aggravates your vital energies (doshas) and reduces immunity. An aggravated vata will make you more emotionally vulnerable and fear-prone increased pitta will move you to anger and even frustration and enhanced kapha will make you more possessive.
  • The frequency of sex depends on your constitution and seasons – Kapha types indulge in sex more frequently than your vata& pitta types thanks to the extra stamina they possess.
  • Vata types might find satisfaction in changing partners. While the difficult-to-quench-their-desires pitta types are usually in the quest for more intensity.
  • An absolutely satisfying sexual union, when developed over time, bestows you and your partner with health and vitality.
  • For best results, each of the partners should be physically and emotionally involved with the other.
  • Touch, smell, food, music and ambience play a vital role in developing, increasing and prolonging intimacy.

Even in the present modern era of the Internet, Mobiles and fast communication, there are very high levels of anxiety and depression in the individuals diagnosed with certain Sexual problems. These sexual problems are still associated with social stigma and taboo as a result very seldom are discussed and reported to physicians.

In this section, Bhagwati Ayurveda tries to summarize all the detailed authentic information regarding the prevalent sexual disorders/problems with their probable causes and certain remedies which might be beneficial in curing them.

2. WHAT IS PREMATURE EJACULATION

Premature ejaculation is ejaculation that occurs sooner than desired, either before or shortly after penetration, causing distress to either one or both partners.

The patient describes the process in his own words as “it was uncontrolled ejaculation either sometimes before or sometimes shortly after the penetration, with minimal stimulation, much before I expected.”

Such incidences result in an unsatisfactory experience for both partners. Continued episodes like these may increase the stress and anxiety which may further deteriorate the condition and even relations between the partners are sometimes restrained.

It is one of the most commonly prevalent male sexual problems of modern times. According to a data, 21% of men in the age group 21-59 years are suffering from this burning problem today and the numbers are increasing day by day so fast that probably Premature Ejaculation has affected every man at some point in his life.

HOW AYURVEDA HELPS:

Vajikarana (Aphrodisiac Therapy) is one of the eight branches of Ayurveda that deals with the preservation and amplification of the sexual potency of a healthy man and conception of healthy progeny as well as management of defective semen, disturbed sexual potency, and spermatogenesis, along with treatment of seminal related disorders in man. Vajikarana promotes the sexual capacity and performance as well as improves the physical, psychological, and social health of an individual. In Ayurveda, there is a concept of Shukragata Vata, which can be correlated with Premature Ejaculation.

As the psychological component of the disease is very strong, psychosexual counselling is a must in such cases. In extreme cases Placebo or psychological counselling is not sufficient to control a vitiated Vata Dosha, then internal medications are advisable along with some Yogic Exercises. Considerable modifications in the Diet and the Lifestyles of the patients (or couples) are suggested for better and significant improvement.

Panchakarma Procedures like – Shirodhara, Sarvanga Snehana, Swedana, Matra Basti yiled better results while treating Premature ejaculation.
